I recently retired from my longstanding full time position within the department of Psychiatry at University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics. I am returning in order to work part time in the Crisis Stabilization Unit, because I am so pleased that this unit has finally come to be, after years of planning. I think times of crisis can be great opportunities for change. I also think inpatient hospital settings are not typically the best places to make those changes. If we can meet people where they are at while in crisis, help them harness the part of themselves that are ready to make needed changes, and link them with ongoing services and supports if needed, a lot can be accomplished in a single visit.
