Anemia is a condition that causes weakness and tiredness. Anemia happens when the hemoglobin level in your blood is low. Hemoglobin is an iron-rich protein that gives blood its red color. This protein helps red blood cells carry oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body.
The Anemia Management Clinic treats patients with anemia who are scheduled for an elective surgery or an elective high-blood-loss procedure. The clinic also specializes in treatment of anemia for obstetrical patients and patients who do not accept blood products.
What to Expect at Your Anemia Management Clinic Visit
When surgery is scheduled, your blood will be checked. If you have anemia, you will be referred to the Anemia Management Clinic. Same-day appointments are available.
The Anemia Management Clinic staff and nurse practitioner work closely with your medical and surgical teams prior to surgery or high-blood-loss procedures.
Why it is Important to Treat Anemia
A person with anemia may have more problems during surgery than those without anemia. Some of these problems may be:
More bleeding during surgery
Problems after surgery

When surgery is scheduled, we will check to see if you have anemia. We do this by checking the hemoglobin in your blood.
