The Department of Pathology is an internationally recognized academic department. Our mission is to provide leadership in all three of the activities of an academic pathology department, namely: patient care, education and scholarship.
The Clinical Laboratories are well recognized for providing outstanding and comprehensive care to the patients we serve. The breadth and depth of services provided are amongst the best in the country.
The broad spectrum and quality of our teaching programs for medical students biomedical scientists are widely recognized.
Similarly, there is outstanding scholarship in the department with international recognition for our research in the field of immunology and tumor biology.

The DeGowin Blood Center is a hospital-based blood center that collects blood for University of Iowa Health Care patients.
Phlebotomy, commonly referred to as a “blood draw,” is the act of drawing or removing blood from the circulatory system to obtain a sample for diagnostic tests.
The Decedent Care Center (DCC) provides compassionate and professional support to families and hospital staff following the death of a patient.
