SFCH Sedation Prep and Recovery Volunteer
Unit Description
University of Iowa Health Care Stead Family Children’s Hospital Sedation Prep & Recovery Unit is focused on providing patient and family centered care to pediatric patients before, during and after short procedures or radiology imaging. A volunteer placement on this unit provides the volunteer with experience interacting with pediatric patients and families, and exposure to medical technology specific to children in SFCH. A volunteer placed here will get to know SFCH and the procedure and imaging process. Dedicated volunteers with 30+ hours on the unit may have opportunity to observe a procedure. Initial orientation will provide the volunteer with specific guidelines for interacting with patients. Duties will expand when the volunteer is comfortable with the perioperative unit and assigned duties. Please consider this assignment carefully. Must have a passion for pediatric population, ability to communicate with children of all ages, and possess good judgment. This is a great placement for a volunteer who is both motivated and independent. A placement in the sedation unit will be challenging and rewarding experience.
Training
All prospective Sedation Prep & Recovery volunteers will attend large group orientation where they will receive general UI Health Care information. Volunteers will also attend small group orientation to receive training and information specific to their subunit. Finally, all volunteers must spend a complete shift with an experienced volunteer mentor before they are able to volunteer on their own..
