SFCH Surgery Prep and Recovery Volunteer
Unit Description
The Surgery Prep & Recovery Unit in Stead Family Children’s Hospital allows volunteers to provide support to pediatric patients and their families on the day of imaging or procedure. Surgery Prep and Recovery volunteers work closely with the nursing staff and aid in transporting or directing patients and their families, providing diversional activities for children waiting for surgery, cleaning patient rooms, and various other tasks to make the patients and their families most comfortable while at University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics. This unit is interested in volunteers who have a passion for pediatrics, can communicate well with children and their families, and are motivated and independent.
Training
All prospective Surgery Prep & Recovery volunteers will attend large group orientation where they will receive general UI Hospitals & Clinics information. Volunteers will also attend small group orientation to receive training and information specific to their subunit. Finally, all volunteers must spend a complete shift with an experienced volunteer mentor before they are able to volunteer on their own.
Uniform
The dress code for this unit is a Volunteer Services polo, khaki pants, and closed-toe shoes. Shirts are available for purchase at Wild Rose Gifts (Main Entrance Lobby) Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Volunteers must follow the professional appearance policy, which includes wearing the volunteer badge at all times.
Hours Available
University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital Surgery Prep & Recovery unit has volunteer time options Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Volunteers need to sign up for three hours each week and cannot split that time into one-hour or two-hour shifts. All volunteer hours should be completed in the same sub-unit.
