About

Suresh Gunasekaran, MBA, is the chief executive officer of University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics. He also serves as associate vice president for University of Iowa Health Care, the state’s comprehensive academic medical center comprised of UI Hospitals & Clinics, the UI Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine, and UI Physicians, the largest multi-specialty medical and surgical group practice in Iowa.

As CEO, Gunasekaran oversees the operational, strategic, and financial performance for UI Hospitals & Clinics, a regional referral center that includes UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital. Among his administrative responsibilities, he leads enterprise-wide commitment to comprehensive primary and specialty care for patients and families, focusing on clinical excellence, collaboration and innovation, quality and safety, and outstanding service.

In his role as associate vice president, Gunasekaran works closely with UI Health Care leaders to advance the organization’s three-part mission of biomedical research, medical education and training, and patient care.

Gunasekaran, who has more than 20 years of experience in health care administration and health care information technology, joined UI Health Care in November 2018. 

Prior to coming to Iowa, he served as chief operations officer for the University of Texas Southwestern Health System in Dallas, Texas. He joined UT Southwestern in 2004 as assistant vice president and chief information officer for the health system. He began his career as an administrative director in outpatient clinical operations at Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee.

Gunasekaran earned an MBA degree with honors at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas.
