Hospitalist Care

A growing number of studies support the value of hospital medicine, proving that Hospitalist Care help reduce patient's length of stay, treatment costs, and improve overall efficiency of care. The UI Hospitalist Service provides care for patients who require hospitalization for the detection and treatment of illnesses. Our goal is for patients to safely transition from care within the hospital to the community through prompt delivery and full attention to the patients' care needs.

Hospitalist care is provided by a team of doctors, nurses, and nurse practitioners that works with the patient’s primary medical doctor and community care team. A physician or community provider may contact the Hospitalist Care Service for assistance with any patient admitted to University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics under our service of care.

Hospitalist Care Deliver Inpatient Care in a Variety of Ways:

  • Collaborate, communicate, and coordinate with all doctors and healthcare personnel caring for hospitalized patients.
  • Co-manage and support care for patients requiring hospitalization as part of a surgery.
  • Consult with other doctors on medical recommendations in managing acute and chronic medical problems in hospitalized patients.
  • Direct care in detecting and treating illnesses causing patients' hospitalization.
