UI Sports Medicine ultrasound services accredited, commended for meeting highest standards
University of Iowa Sports Medicine has received accreditation from the Ultrasound Practice Accreditation Council of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM).
“Ultrasound is an increasingly important tool for diagnosis and treatment in our clinic,” says Mederic M. Hall, MD, director of Musculoskeletal and Sports Ultrasound at UI Sports Medicine. “AIUM accreditation is a welcome recognition of our whole team’s continued dedication to making sure our patients get the best possible care.”
UI Sports Medicine specialists use ultrasound in a variety of ways. In some cases, ultrasound is a more accurate alternative to X-rays or MRI for diagnosis of damaged muscles or tendons or inflammation.
As a treatment tool, ultrasound is used to ensure precision when a physician makes an injection into a joint, muscle, tendon, or nerve. UI Sports Medicine also offers cutting-edge ultrasound-guided microinvasive surgical procedures such as Tenex, which employs ultrasound to find and remove damaged tissue caused by conditions such as golfer’s elbow and jumper’s knee.
“We’re committed to offering nonsurgical or minimally invasive options to our patients who have musculoskeletal and sports-related injuries, whenever those options are appropriate,” says UI Sports Medicine specialist Ryan C. Kruse, MD. “Maintaining the industry’s highest standards for our ultrasound services is part of the work we do to make sure we can deliver the latest less-invasive options available.”
AIUM recognition means UI Sports Medicine meets rigorous voluntary guidelines set by the ultrasound profession. All facets of the practice were assessed, including the training and qualifications of physicians; ultrasound equipment maintenance; documentation; storage and record-keeping practices; policies and procedures to protect patients and staff; quality assurance methods; and the thoroughness, technical quality and interpretation of the sonograms the practice performs.
The standalone UI Sports Medicine Clinic is conveniently located at 2701 Prairie Meadow Drive in Iowa City, with free parking just steps from the front door.
