University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital is home to a dedicated team of highly skilled specialists who perform heart, kidney, and liver transplant procedures for young patients. Members of the multidisciplinary care team—surgeons, physician specialists, anesthesiologists, nurses, pharmacists, child-life specialists, therapists, technologists, social work specialists, and support staff—work collaboratively with families to deliver seamless care with outstanding results.
We recognize that transplant surgery is an ongoing physical and emotional journey for patients and their families. In addition to state-of-the-art medical and surgical care, our approach emphasizes dignity and respect, information sharing, participation, and collaboration involving both the child and the family—beginning before transplant procedure and continuing throughout the first year and beyond.

Lodging and Other Services
UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital offers convenient couches, cots, or recliners that allow parents to rest yet still be close to their children following a transplant procedure.

The 16-room UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital Family Suite, part of the Helen K. Rossi Volunteer Guest House, provides lodging and support services, primarily to family members of patients in the Pediatric and Neonatal Intensive Care Units. Guests are charged a nominal fee for these rooms.
The Ronald McDonald House of Iowa City also serves families of children up to age 18 who are receiving critical medical care at UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital. Referrals are prioritized on a waiting list according to the severity of the child’s illness and distance traveled. Guests are charged a nominal fee.
