Percutaneous Nephrostomy Tube: Displacement, Suture, and Pulling
Last reviewed
What is displacement?
Displacement is when your nephrostomy tube has moved from where it is supposed to be.
What helps prevent displacement?
- Your nephrostomy tube is sutured or stitched to your skin on the outside.
and
- Your nephrostomy tube has a pig-tail shape in your kidney.
What if the suture falls out?
- Check that your nephrostomy tube is not being pulled.
- Put a securement device over your nephrostomy tube. (You can use tape if you do not have a securement device.)
- Clean the skin where you will put the securement device.
- Take off the protective backing.
- Put the adhesive (sticky) side on your skin and press down for 5 seconds.
- Move the tab and lay your nephrostomy tube on top of the device. Make sure the tube is not being pulled.
- Put the tab over your nephrostomy tube.
- If your nephrostomy tube is being replaced within 2 weeks and it is still working, keep a securement device on until that visit. Let the care team know when you come to that visit.

If your nephrostomy tube is not being replaced within 2 weeks or it is not working, call the Interventional Radiology coordinator at 319-353-8141.
8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday to Friday.
You still have the pig-tail shape in your kidney helping keep it in place. Only a strong pull will make your tube fall out if the suture falls out.
Should I change the securement device?
- Change your securement device (or tape) with your dressing change.
- Change your securement device (or tape) sooner if it gets wet or dirty.
What do I need to know about pulling?
- Make sure your nephrostomy tube is not being pulled. Pulling can cause:
- Pain
- Displacement
What if there is pulling?
- Check that your suture is still there. If the suture fell out, do the steps on page 1.
- Check that urine (pee) is going into your bag.
- Put a clean dressing or tape over your nephrostomy tube. Make sure there is not more pulling.
- Watch for 2 to 3 hours, making sure the tubing is still in place and working.
- If your nephrostomy tube is being replaced within 2 weeks and it is still working, keep doing dressing and tape changes. Make sure there is not more pulling. Let the care team know when you come to that visit.
