Percutaneous Nephrostomy Tube: Wearing, Emptying, and Changing the Urine Collection Bag
Last reviewed
Where should I put my urine collection bag?
- Keep the bag lower than your abdomen (belly) or waist. Urine (pee) cannot drain out of your body if the bag is above your abdomen.
- Make sure the bag is supported so it does not pull on your tube. A leg bag with straps can help with this.
- Keep your collection bag tubing straight so it does not kink. A kink stops urine from going into your bag.
When should I empty my urine collection bag?
- You need to empty your collection bag throughout the day.
- Empty it when it is half full. Do not wait until it is full.
- At night, you may use a larger collection bag (such as a 2-liter bag).
How do I empty my urine collection bag?
- Go to a restroom.
- Wash your hands with soap and water.
- Turn the cap to the left with the bag over the toilet. Urine will come out as soon as you turn and loosen the cap. Do not take the cap off.
- Empty the urine into the toilet.
- Twist the cap to the right to tighten it.
- Flush the toilet.
- Wash your hands with soap and water.
When should I change my urine collection bag?
- Put a new collection bag on at least 1 time a month. You may put a new bag on sooner if you want.
- Let your care team know if you cannot get a new bag.
