If you have recurring ear, nose, or throat problems despite treatment from your primary care provider, it may be time to see an otolaryngologist—also known as an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) doctor.
University of Iowa Health Care’s otolaryngologists care for adults and children. Our services include:
- Evaluating people who keep getting sinus infections, sore throats, or tonsillitis
- Ordering tests such as swallowing studies, hearing tests, and seasonal allergy tests
- Performing procedures ranging from nasal endoscopy to ear tube surgery
- Prescribing therapies such as medication, vestibular rehabilitation, or continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy
- Providing referrals for advanced treatments like skull base surgery and facial reanimation surgery
Whether your child has chronic ear infections or you’re concerned about a lump in your neck, you can expect expert diagnosis and treatment from UI Health Care’s ENT team.
One-stop otolaryngology care
Comprehensive otolaryngologists diagnose and treat a broad range of conditions. Some also subspecialize and see patients with very specific conditions in the head or neck.
This means you may be able to get all the services you need (including testing, diagnosis, and treatments), from the same ENT provider.
Tests and treatments that aren’t widely available
When you choose one of our otolaryngologists, you also have access to state-of-the-art procedures that aren’t offered at most smaller ENT clinics. These include:
This small, implantable device treats people with moderate to severe sleep apnea who can’t tolerate CPAP therapy. After the device is implanted under the skin in your upper chest, it stimulates the muscles that keep your airway open while you sleep.
This minimally invasive procedure is used for both diagnosis and treatment of salivary gland disease. It lets us see inside your salivary glands to determine if you have a blockage or infection. And it lets us remove salivary stones or fix salivary ducts instead of cutting out the entire gland.
This procedure can help restore hearing in people with abnormal bone growth in their middle ear (otosclerosis). We replace a tiny bone called the stape with an artificial device.
Leading ENT subspecialists
In some cases, our otolaryngologists diagnose conditions that require an advanced level of care. If you have one of these conditions—such as acoustic neuroma or Meniere’s disease—we can help.
UI Health Care’s otolaryngology team also includes subspecialists who have advanced training and experience in specific ENT conditions or procedures.
Depending on your needs, your provider may refer you to one of the following otolaryngology subspecialists:
Facial plastic and reconstructive surgeons who treat facial paralysis and nerve disorders, and can help rebuild parts of the head or neck after cancer treatment
Head and neck cancer specialists who help treat oral cancer, thyroid cancer, salivary gland cancer, and more
Laryngologists who treat voice and swallowing disorders
Otologists and neurotologists who specialize in treating hearing loss and balance disorders
Rhinologists who treat nasal and sinus disorders such as allergies, nasal obstruction, and problems with your sense of smell
Skull base surgeons who remove cancerous or noncancerous tumors that grow in the skull base (the area behind your eyes and nose)
