Where’s the lead shield
UI Health Care experts are not putting lead shields on patients for imaging exams. This is due to:
- Updates in technology.
- Findings from over 70 years of research studies.
The National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements has found that lead shields are no longer needed. For patient safety, they should not be used.
- Our clinics now have better imaging devices. They reduce radiation exposure by over 95%.
- Researchers have found that reproductive organs are not affected by imaging systems.
- Shields may hide parts of the body that need to be seen. This can stop accurate diagnosis.
Many hospitals no longer shield patients for imaging exams. Doing x-rays and other radiology exams without a lead shield is safe. It is not a risk to a patient’s reproductive health. It will also allow for better diagnosis.
