About Michael S. Rocca
Michael Rocca, MD, is a fellowship-trained orthopedic sports medicine surgeon who specializes in the non-surgical and surgical treatment of sports-related injuries of the shoulder, knee, and hip. He cares for patients with a wide range of conditions, including knee meniscus and ligament injuries, cartilage injuries, rotator cuff and labrum injuries of the shoulder, and hip impingement (femoroacetabular impingement). He has advanced training in arthroscopic, minimally invasive, and reconstructive techniques for complex shoulder, knee, and hip disorders.
Rocca is actively involved in research focused on clinical outcomes following sports-related injuries. His research interests include cartilage and joint preservation, knee osteotomy and ligament reconstruction, and patient-reported outcomes.
During his time in Pittsburgh, he worked with the medical staff for the University of Pittsburgh, the Pittsburgh Penguins, and the Pittsburgh Steelers. He also served as an on-field physician for the NFL Scouting Combine in 2025.
Rocca earned his medical degree and completed his orthopedic residency at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, where he served as administrative chief resident. He then completed a fellowship in orthopedic sports medicine at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
