Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS), also known as acne inversa, is a chronic skin condition that causes painful, recurring boil-like lumps to form in the areas of the body where skin comes together, such as your armpits and groin. These lumps will sometimes cause abscesses (a buildup of pus) that can break open and result in scarring.
While we know HS is due to blockages in hair follicles, the exact cause of these blockages is unknown. Genetics, hormones, autoimmune disorders, and environmental conditions all seem to play some role in the development of hidradenitis suppurativa. HS is not contagious and is not caused by poor hygiene.
Symptoms of hidradenitis suppurativa
The main symptom of hidradenitis suppurativa is recurrent, painful, inflamed boil-like lumps that tend to affect the same areas of the body each time you have a flareup. These lumps will often contain pus and drain fluid without infection. They may also cause tunneling, which is when two boils may be connected under the skin, and scarring.
These symptoms can range from mild to severe depending on the size of the lumps, how many places they occur on the body, and the level of pain you experience.
Additionally, because of the painful and recurring nature of the condition, many people with HS also experience depression and anxiety.
How hidradenitis suppurativa is diagnosed
Hidradenitis suppurativa can be diagnosed by reviewing your medical and family history and conducting a physical examination. Recurring outbreaks, scarring, and how your flareups have responded to other treatments are all additional ways your provider can determine if you have HS.
