The single major disease of parathyroid glands is an overactive (hyperparathyroidism) parathyroid gland. The parathyroid glands continue to make large amounts of parathyroid hormone even when the calcium level is normal. Over-production of parathyroid hormone can make you feel tired and cause osteoporosis and other problems.
The most common cause of excess hormone production is the development of a benign (non-cancerous) tumor in one of the parathyroid glands.
The Dangers of Hyperparathyroidism Include:
- Bone fractures
- Kidney stones
- Nervous system complaints
- Pancreatitis
- Peptic ulcers
- Severe osteoporosis and osteopenia
The surgical removal of the enlarged parathyroid gland (or glands) is the main treatment for the disorder.
In the last five years, our surgeons performed 400 parathyroid surgeries. Our surgeons provide excellent, personalized care to patients with endocrine diseases.
