This small organ-about the size of a pea is known as the body's master gland. Often, the cause of pituitary disorders is pituitary gland tumors that interfere with the normal formation and release of hormones. These tumors are fairly common in adults. They are not cancer. The tumors can cause production of too much or too little, in either case creating a hormonal imbalance.

Our team members treat pituitary gland disorders by hormone therapy, surgery or radiation therapy.

Located at the Base of the Brain, the Pituitary Gland Produces:

Growth hormone

  • Stimulates growth in childhood
  • Important for maintaining muscle and bone mass

Luteinizing hormone (LH)

  • Regulates testosterone in men and estrogen in women

Prolactin

  • Stimulates milk production after childbirth

Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH)

  • Stimulates the thyroid gland

Adrenocorticotropin (ACTH)

  • Stimulates production of cortisol by the adrenal glands

Antidiuretic hormone (ADH)

  • Regulates water balance in your body

Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH)

  • Promotes sperm production in men
  • Stimulates the ovaries to enable ovulation in women
