Transgender care

The University of Iowa Health Care LGBTQ Clinic offers comprehensive transgender care in a welcoming, inclusive environment. Our staff specializes in compassionate care and support of transgender and gender-nonconforming patients at every stage of the gender-confirmation journey.

Our pioneering clinic is a national leader in gender-affirming care and surgery and offers some procedures not available anywhere else in Iowa.

One place for all of your gender-affirming care

As you progress toward gender confirmation, you’ll need physicians, surgeons, pharmacists, mental health professionals, and other providers who specialize in working with transgender patients and who understand your goals and concerns.

Whether you’re just beginning to consider hormone therapy or you’re recovering from gender-affirming surgery, you’ll receive your care every step of the way from professionals who are trained to provide transgender medicine.

If you’re already on your path to gender confirmation, our team will work with you to review your medical history and create a treatment plan that will help you achieve your goals.

Your care team can include UI Health Care experts in these fields and others:

  • Family medicine
  • Internal medicine
  • Obstetrics and gynecology
  • Pediatrics
  • Plastic and reconstructive surgery
  • Urology and reconstructive urologic surgery
  • Dermatology
  • Mental health
  • Pharmacy
  • Physical therapy
  • Social work
  • Speech therapy

When you need a provider outside of UI Health Care, we help you find a professional who will meet your needs.

Transgender medicine not available anywhere else in Iowa

When you choose the UI Health Care LGBTQ Clinic for your gender-affirming care, you’re choosing Iowa’s only comprehensive academic medical center, home to world-class experts in more than 200 medical specialties. Our doctors are also researchers who use, and often help create, the most advanced therapies and procedures available anywhere.

We’re the only center in Iowa that offers gender-confirming genital surgeries for trans feminine persons, including zero-depth vaginoplasty (also called vulvoplasty) and full-depth vaginoplasty.

And our extensive staff of expert physicians in every field allows us to offer the most comprehensive transgender medical care in the state.

Where you belong

Your UI Health Care transgender medicine provider will know and use your name and pronouns. That’s because every member of our team has had LGBTQ-specific cultural humility training.
