ATV Rider Safety Training Courses
ATV rider safety training gives riders the knowledge and hands-on skills they need to make better decisions, avoid common risks, and stay in control.
Research from a large Iowa study of more than 4,800 adolescents shows that very few youth riders — only about 8% — have completed a certified all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) training course, whether online or in person.
Certified ATV rider safety courses teach responsible riding skills and habits that can significantly reduce the risk of injury and death.
Those who have had training are:
- Twice as likely to wear a helmet consistently
- Less likely to carry passengers
- Less likely to ride on public roads
Even a single training session can improve a rider’s knowledge, judgement, and behavior. This is especially true when the training includes hands-on experience that allows them to practice real-world skills.
- Proper helmet and protective gear use
- Mounting, dismounting, and basic vehicle control
- Turning, braking, and handling uneven terrain
- How to recognize and avoid risky situations
- Safe and legal riding practices (on public vs. private land)
While online courses are helpful for learning the basics, in-person, hands-on training is strongly recommended.
