Heart attack survivor reunites with lifesaving AirCare team
Multiple news outlets joined Owen Meyer as he met the Quad Cities AirCare flight crew who saved his life
It was a moment full of tears, handshakes, and hugs as the family of Owen Meyer met with the medical professionals who helped save his life last December.
Meyer, of Sabula, Iowa, experienced a sudden heart attack while working at a remote construction site near Clinton, Iowa. It wasn’t long before he would find himself being flown by the Quad Cities’ AirCare team, providing University of Iowa Health Care’s critical care expertise during transport.
In a message to UI Health Care, Meyer says, “The pilot, nurse, and paramedic are true heroes. Without them that day, I would not be able to recover with 100% of my mental and physical abilities intact!”
Meyer’s wife, Rori, told WHBF-TV how impressed the family was with the flight crew.
“Their demeanor, their knowledge, their personalities, was just such, ‘They’re here, like superheroes,'” says Rori Meyer.
As impressed and grateful as the family was for the expertise and compassion of the AirCare team, the flight crew was excited to see Meyer doing so well. Often, flight crews aren’t able to find out what happens to patients once they’re transferred to a hospital team.
“With HIPAA and everything, you just don't know whether they did OK or not. So it's really, really, really awesome to hear about the good ones and to see him up and walking,” says Ashley Harrington, a flight nurse who cared for Meyer.
