About Keith W. Michael
Keith Michael, MD is an orthopedic spine surgeon who specializes helping patients figure out if spine surgery is right for them and if so, what particular approach and options would be best. While practicing at Emory he was recognized numerous times by Atlanta Top Doctors and for 99th percentile patient satisfaction scores, which he attributed to his desire to make sure patients understand their problems and are involved in determining the treatment plan. There is no one size fits all spine surgery and often the best spine surgery is the one specifically tailored to patients' imaging, but also their goals and other medical conditions. He was fortunate to work at Emory University and lead one of the nation's preeminent Spine Surgery Fellowship training programs, which meant he was immersed in the newest techniques and developments for the last 12 years. His focus on good patient outcomes and the patient experience was a perfect fit with the opportunities to grow spine care at UI.
His clinical research interests are based on improving patient outcomes and evolving surgical techniques to solve spine problems with less invasive procedures.
Dr. Michael began his education at Stanford University studying Chemical Engineering. He received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School, before completing his Orthopedic Surgery residency at Duke University Medical Center. He completed a fellowship in Orthopedic Spine Surgery at Emory University Medical Center. After training he returned to Duke University as an Assistant Professor in Orthopaedic Surgery. Later he was recruited back to Emory to help care for spine trauma patients and eventually grew one of the largest elective spine surgery practices in the institution. He couldn't be more excited to join the Iowa community and hopes to use his experiences to continue to grow and improve spine care here.
