Pediatric Sports Cardiology
Young athletes push their hearts to perform at high levels. If your child experiences chest pain, fainting, racing heartbeats, or has been diagnosed with a heart condition, it’s natural to wonder whether sports are still safe.
University of Iowa Health Care Stead Family Children’s Hospital’s Pediatric Sports Cardiology program provides expert evaluation and guidance for young athletes of all levels: recreational, high school, and collegiate. We help your child safely return to play whenever possible, with confidence and a clear plan for long-term heart health.
Sports cardiology evaluations and return-to-play clearance
Our program cares for young athletes with a wide range of heart-related concerns. This includes symptoms such as chest discomfort during exercise, dizziness or fainting with activity, and fast or irregular heartbeats, as well as unexpected findings on sports screenings or known congenital heart conditions.
Each visit begins with a thoughtful conversation about your child’s symptoms, medical and family history, and sports participation, followed by a detailed physical exam. Based on this evaluation, we offer tailored heart testing to better understand how the heart functions at rest and during activity.
Some athletes need only a focused evaluation for reassurance, while others benefit from more advanced testing before return-to-play decisions. Our goal is to provide clear answers, practical guidance, and a personalized plan that supports both heart health and safe participation in sports whenever possible.
Ongoing management and coordinated sports care
When a heart condition is identified, we focus on balancing safety with the physical and emotional benefits of athletic participation.
Care may include:
- Advanced cardiac testing
- Shared decision-making with the athlete and family
- Routine follow-up to guide long-term recommendations
- Collaboration with sports medicine providers
We work closely with schools and athletic departments, coaches, athletic trainers, and sports medicine teams. Together, we develop individualized participation recommendations and, when needed, emergency action plans. Clear communication ensures everyone supporting your child understands how to promote safe training and competition.
Our approach to care
During your child’s appointment:
- Height, weight, and vital signs are collected
- A pediatric cardiologist reviews symptoms, sports history, and medical history
- Cardiac testing may be performed or scheduled
If testing is completed, we review results with you and clearly explain participation recommendations. You will leave understanding whether your child can safely return to play, needs restrictions, or requires follow-up care. Our approach emphasizes clarity, partnership, and long-term heart health.
