Atrial fibrillation (Afib) is an irregular and often rapid heartbeat. It is caused by abnormal electrical signals in the heart. This can lead to blood clots, stroke, heart failure, chronic fatigue, and other health problems. 

Risk factors for Afib

  • Older age (65+) 
  • High blood pressure 
  • Untreated sleep apnea 
  • Heart disease 
  • Obesity 
  • Alcohol consumption 
  • Family history of Afib 
  • Diabetes 
  • Thyroid problems 

Symptoms of Afib

Many people with Afib do not have symptoms. If you have new, severe, or symptoms that do not go away, see a health care provider right away. 

  • Heart palpitations (heart is racing or pounding) 
  • Shortness of breath 
  • Feeling weak 
  • Feeling more tired than normal 
  • Less physical activity 
  • Lightheadedness 
  • Feeling dizzy 
  • Confusion 
  • Chest pain
