Heart problems can affect young children, adolescents, or the baby in the womb. If there are concerns about your child’s heart health, your pediatrician may recommend a cardiologist, a specialist in the detection and treatment of heart disease in children. The pediatric cardiologists at University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital are dedicated to providing compassionate, state-of-the-art and convenient delivery of care to children and young adults.
The pediatric cardiology division offers complete clinical services for the diagnosis and treatment of congenital and acquired heart disease in babies, children and young adults.

Adult Congenital Heart Disease Care
The UI Adult Congenital Heart Disease Clinic (ACHD) provides comprehensive, specialized care for adults living with congenital heart disease.
Cardiac Neurodevelopmental Follow-up Program
The Cardiac Neurodevelopmental Follow-up Program is for children with congenital heart disease. The High-Risk Infant Follow-up Program and the Center for Disabilities and Development work together with the pediatric cardiology team for your child’s care.
Heart Surgery
UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital’s pediatric heart surgeons perform the full range of surgeries to treat patients with pediatric heart diseases and congenital heart defects.
Cardiac Electrophysiology
If your child has an abnormal heart rhythm or other suspected heart ailment, he or she may need to see an electrophysiologist.
Fontan Clinic
The Fontan Clinic at University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital is Iowa’s only comprehensive, multidisciplinary program providing follow-up care for your child following Fontan completion and continuing throughout childhood to young adulthood.
Heart Transplant
Heart transplant surgeons use a team-oriented approach to care for patients with congenital (“born with”) heart disease and other forms of heart failure.
Fetal Heart Program
The fetal heart program at University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital works closely with families whose children have been diagnosed with a heart defect before birth.
Interstage Clinic
Special Care for High Risk Infants with Heart Defects Single ventricle heart defects are the most complex and difficult heart defects. These infants will need two surgeries within the first six months of life.
Board-certified specialists offer the complete range of evaluation and management to the following disorders:
- Congenital heart disease in children and adults
- Fetal heart disease
- Acquired heart disease (such as cardiomyopathies, Kawasaki disease, etc.)
- Cardiac arrhythmias
