Cardiometabolic Care
Pediatric cardiometabolic care focuses on keeping your child’s heart and metabolism healthy, now and in the future. It includes care for cardiometabolic conditions like high cholesterol, obesity-related heart risk, and inherited lipid disorders.
At University of Iowa Health Care Stead Family Children’s Hospital, our team combines medical expertise with preventive strategies. We teach families how lifestyle, nutrition, and exercise affect cardiometabolic health, and we provide personalized plans to lower the risk for heart disease, diabetes, and other complications later in life.
Symptoms and causes for cardiometabolic conditions
Many cardiometabolic conditions in children develop quietly, without obvious symptoms. Your child may feel perfectly healthy even if cholesterol or triglyceride levels are elevated. These conditions can be caused by:
Some children inherit lipid disorders, such as familial hypercholesterolemia, that cause cholesterol to build up in arteries and veins from an early age.
Low levels of physical activity and unhealthy eating patterns can raise the risk of cardiometabolic problems in children.
Health conditions that influence weight or metabolism can also play a role in cardiometabolic risk.
Because genetic factors often run in families, we may recommend screening siblings or parents to identify shared risk factors early.
Diagnosis and evaluation
If your child’s pediatrician finds abnormal cholesterol levels or other cardiometabolic risk factors, they may refer you to our program for further evaluation. At your child’s first visit, you can expect:
- Lab testing before or on the day of the appointment to measure cholesterol and other lipid levels
- A meeting with both your provider and a pediatric dietitian
- A full review of your child’s health history, diet, and daily routines
- Discussion of individualized lifestyle goals — covering nutrition, activity, and other preventive steps
Our team takes the time to explain test results in easy-to-understand language and answer all your questions about treatment or follow-up.
Treatment and management
Every child’s treatment plan is different. For some, lifestyle changes alone — such as improving diet and increasing physical activity — may be enough to achieve healthy cholesterol levels. For others, especially those with genetic conditions, medication may be needed to keep cholesterol in a safe range.
Our team will:
- Set specific, realistic goals for nutrition and exercise that fit your family’s life
- Work with you to track progress and celebrate improvements
- Use cholesterol-lowering medications when necessary to reduce long-term risk
- Provide ongoing education and follow-up, ensuring changes feel achievable and sustainable
We strongly encourage children and families to build heart-healthy habits that not only improve health now but also increase their lifespan.
What to expect long-term
Managing cardiometabolic health is a lifelong journey, but one your child doesn’t have to take alone. We partner with families to monitor cholesterol levels, reinforce healthy routines, and adjust treatments as your child grows.
By focusing on prevention early, we help children avoid complications like heart disease or diabetes later in life. You’ll leave each visit with a clear plan, realistic goals, and the confidence that you’re setting your child up for a heart-healthy future.
