Your doctor has ordered vaginal valium for you. This means you will put the pill in the vagina instead of swallowing it. This is called an off-label use, which means it is not the usual way the medicine is used. Many patients have found it helpful for their symptoms. A few people have felt sleepy after using it.
For your first dose, do not go to sleep right away. Stay awake so you can see how the medicine affects you. If you have side effects that change your daily life, please tell us. We can change the treatment or try something different.
How to use the pill vaginally:
- Wash your hands.
- Use your finger to gently insert the pill into the vagina. Place it as far as you can reach. You may use a small amount of lubricant, olive oil, or canola oil to make this easier.
- You can make the pill softer by wetting it with water. This can help if the pill is not fully absorbed or your symptoms are not getting better.
- The outside color of the pill may look like vaginal discharge. This is not an infection.
- Some pieces of the pill may come out later in small clumps. This is normal.
- Use the medicine as often as your provider prescribed.
Sexual activity
We do not know how vaginal valium affects a partner during sex. We have not had patients report problems, but it is important to let your partner know.
If the pill does not work well:
Tell us if the pill is not helping. We may prescribe a valium cream instead. Insurance does not often cover the cream, and the cost is around $40 to $50.
