Testosterone is a hormone made by the testicles that plays an important role in sexual development, physical growth, and masculine characteristics.
If your testosterone is low, you may experience a variety of symptoms that can affect your daily life such as fatigue, reduced endurance, low mood, irritability, poor concentration and memory, low bone density, reduced sex drive, erectile dysfunction, reduced muscle, and/or weight gain.
Our University of Iowa Health Care orthopedics and rehabilitation specialists have the expertise and experience to address your low testosterone and its underlying causes. Together, we will create a comprehensive treatment plan to meet your needs and help you build strength, improve bone health, and get you back to the things you love.
Our testosterone clinic accepts insurance, does not require a referral, and offers the convenience of telemedicine visits—making it easier than ever to get the care you need.
The first step is to review your health history and perform a workup to determine if your testosterone levels are low enough to require treatment. This includes two separate blood tests to measure your testosterone levels. These blood tests should be completed in the morning when testosterone levels tend to be the highest.
Your provider will order additional tests to help determine the cause of your low testosterone levels and rule out any underlying health issues that could affect (or prevent) your treatment.
You can start therapy as soon as your blood tests come back with evidence of low testosterone and your provider has determined you are a good candidate for treatment.
Testosterone therapy treatment
Testosterone is most commonly administered in one of two ways:
- Gels. These are applied once a day, and the testosterone is absorbed directly into the skin.
- Injections. Testosterone is directly injected into the muscles and is slowly absorbed into the bloodstream. These are self-administered every seven days. Injections are often the least expensive choice and are usually covered by insurance.
In addition to providing testosterone therapy, you will also be instructed on lifestyle changes you can make to help improve your testosterone levels. This includes learning how to optimize your nutrition, physical activity, and sleep to lose weight, build muscle, and improve mood and energy.
Who can benefit from testosterone therapy?
If you are an adult man (assigned male at birth) who was been diagnosed with low testosterone, you are eligible for care at our clinic.
While testosterone levels decline naturally as you age, certain health conditions can also cause low testosterone. Your provider will discuss your health history with you along with the results from your tests to determine if you could benefit from testosterone therapy.
