Heart failure is a condition in which your heart is stiff or decreased in strength and doesn’t pump enough blood for your body’s needs. Heart failure is a chronic condition that can cause symptoms like shortness of breath, persistent breathing issues, abdominal fullness, and swelling in the legs. It can result in frequent hospitalization.
Our cardiologists offer the latest advancements in heart failure care and treatment. This includes the CardioMEMS™ Heart Failure System, an advanced monitoring system that involves implanting a small sensor into your pulmonary artery to measure pressures within the cardiovascular system.
The device will keep your provider up to date with the status of your condition. If it detects any signs of worsening heart failure, CardioMEMS™ will directly alert your provider. This early intervention can help them adjust treatment to manage—and prevent—symptoms.
Performed in our state-of-the-art cardiac catheterization lab using the latest technologies, this minimally invasive treatment can improve your quality of life.
How the CardioMEMS™ Heart Failure System works
The CardioMEMS™ device is a small, wireless sensor (about the size of a paperclip) that is implanted into your pulmonary artery during a minimally invasive heart catheterization procedure. This procedure usually allows patients to go home the same day with only minor restrictions for a few days after.
The sensor is completely sealed and does not have a battery or lead (wire). Once implanted, you will be able to take readings from the comfort of your home with a portable CardioMEMS™ Patient Electronics System and transmit that information directly to your provider. Your provider will then review the data and let you know if they suspect any changes to your condition.
This will help your provider monitor any signs of worsening heart failure earlier and help prevent the need for additional appointments and future hospitalizations.
Are you a candidate for the CardioMEMS™ Heart Failure System?
CardioMEMS™ is recommended for patients who have been diagnosed with heart failure and have been hospitalized at least once in the past year or have an elevated BNP level.
If you think CardioMEMS™ might be right for you, talk to your provider. They will perform a physical evaluation and a review of your medical history to determine if it is right for you.
