Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP)
Sudden death is over 20 times more frequent in people with epilepsy than the general population.
In recent research findings, University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics neurologist George B. Richerson, MD, PhD, helped to draw the connection between serotonin, epileptic seizures, depression, and SUDEP.
In 2012, Dr. Richerson received a research grant from NIH to further advance our knowledge of epilepsy and SUDEP.
His work with neurosurgeon Matthew A. Howard, MD, is offering providers new evaluation tools and treatment options for epilepsy patients. The program recently was designated a level 4 epilepsy center by the NAEC.
