It’s normal to feel some mild hip pain or stiffness after trying a new activity or type of exercise. But if your symptoms don’t go away—and they make it hard to get through the day—it may be time to see a hip specialist.

University of Iowa Health Care’s orthopedic experts treat conditions and injuries that cause hip pain. We routinely help people who: 

If you’re not eligible for (or interested in) surgery, you’ll find treatments ranging from physical therapy and joint injections to other musculoskeletal treatments.  

And if your provider recommends surgery, you can count on our experienced team. We perform hundreds of traditional and minimally invasive hip surgeries every year. 

A team approach to hip care

Because there isn’t a one-size-fits-all treatment for hip problems, you may work with more than one specialist.  

If an underlying condition is causing your hip pain, you might also need to see a provider who specializes in that condition. Or, if you’ve injured your hip, you might partner with experts who can repair the injury and help you recover.

Our team includes:

Orthopedic surgeons who offer the latest surgical treatments. These include hip replacement and reconstruction surgeries, hip preservation surgery, and cartilage repair. We also treat orthopedic trauma and fractures.

Sports medicine specialists who offer nonsurgical treatments such as steroid injections, biologic injections, and other musculoskeletal treatments.

Physical therapists who can help you improve hip pain, recover from surgery, or get back on your feet after an injury.

Rheumatologists who specialize in treating osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, which are common causes of hip pain.

Expert hip care for people of all ages

Orthopedic hip specialists from UI Health Care treat people of all ages and activity levels. We also offer unique orthopedic services that aren’t available at every medical center. 

Our areas of expertise include: 

  • Pediatric orthopedic care: We offer nonsurgical and surgical treatments for hip problems that affect infants, children, and teens. These problems include hip dysplasia and slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE). 

  • Hip preservation: We’re home to a specialty hip preservation clinic for people who are 12-40 years old. Many of our patients travel here after being told they’re too young for hip surgery, and they should avoid sports or other physical activities. Our team routinely treats people in this age group using procedures such as hip arthroscopy and periacetabular osteotomy (PAO surgery). 

  • Hip replacement: We perform hundreds of hip replacement surgeries annually on people with conditions such as arthritis and osteonecrosis. We offer the latest minimally invasive techniques, including direct anterior hip replacement. And we’re the go-to team in Iowa for repairing hip replacements that have failed. 

  • Hip fracture care: Our orthopedic trauma surgeons combined with our nationally recognized bone health clinic ensure the best outcomes for patients experiencing a hip fracture.
