Why University of Iowa Health Care

I was interested in the University of Iowa Health Care residency program because of the many opportunities to develop my skills as an ambulatory care pharmacist. At UI Health Care, pharmacists are integrated into a wide variety of outpatient clinics and are able to provide innovative and expanded clinical services for patients. In addition, I was excited by the opportunity to work with preceptors who are experts in their fields, who would both challenge and support me throughout residency. Finally, I was excited to expand my precepting and lecturing skills through the program’s close relationship with the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy. I could not be happier completing my PGY1 and PGY2 residencies at UI Health Care!

Favorite thing to do in Iowa City so far:

Exploring all the beautiful walking trails! My favorites are Kent Park and the trails at Lake MacBride!

The University of Iowa Health Care residency program stood out to me due to the immense amount of ambulatory care experiences available! I valued that this program would allow me to complete rotations alongside clinical pharmacists who are highly specialized and valued as part of the interprofessional team. The opportunity to be actively involved in precepting student pharmacists and collaborate with the College of Pharmacy was something that drew me to this program. I knew that UI Health Care would be a great fit for me to continue to grow as a pharmacist!

My first rotation during my fourth year of pharmacy school was an administrative rotation at University of Iowa Health Care. This rotation confirmed my desire to pursue a HSPAL residency. Throughout the remainder of my rotations, I was able to build amazing connections with many pharmacists at UI Health Care which further solidified my desire to complete residency here. Every person I have interacted with at UI Health Care has made me feel welcome and helped foster my learning. The HSPAL program at UI Health Care has a strong reputation of producing exceptional pharmacy leaders. The opportunity to complete a Master of Health Administration was another huge benefit of this program.

The decentralized staffing model also stood out as an excellent way to continue developing my clinical skills within a large academic medical center. Above all, what has meant the most to me is how welcoming and supportive the pharmacy team has been. I really appreciate how willing they’ve been in tailoring my experiences to help me reach my goals.

To top it all off, the warm, welcoming nature of everyone I spoke with made me feel as though I was entering an environment where my learning as well as my wellbeing were being supported, which is much needed during residency!

It sounded like such a wonderful, supportive work environment, and that was something I was looking for. There was a lot of variety of rotations to choose from, which was important to me as someone with a lot of practice interests. So far, the RPD and RPC have been so flexible and willing to change my schedule around to accommodate my interests.

So far, one of my favorite things about Iowa City is all the free events they have downtown; there’s definitely always something going on. I feel like Iowa City is a good balance of college town and “regular” town vibes, which I absolutely love.

As a large academic medical center, University of Iowa Health Care was able to afford me the wide variety of experiences I hoped to gain over the course of my residency training. Furthermore, the UIHC HSPAL residency program was the only one I found that offered the opportunity to pursue a Master of Science in Health Informatics concurrently. Technology and automation are among the areas of pharmacy practice I find most interesting, so this Master's degree option uniquely supports my goals for the residency program. Finally, the people here are all incredibly supportive and insightful, offering opportunities to grow through challenges while avoiding feeling overwhelmed
