Why University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics

Entering into the residency search process, I was set on pursuing a residency at an innovative academic medical center with an emphasis on clinical excellence. I knew University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics possessed nationally ranked specialties, a track record of success for their residents, and three different degree options for HSPAL residents. When I was researching the mission statements of various hospitals, University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics's mission stood out–Changing Medicine. Changing Lives. As someone hoping to innovate and educate as an administrator, I knew a hospital focused on change would empower me to succeed.

However, I was sold to the program when I met the staff. I chose UI Hospitals & Clinics because of the people. When I met the team, one word reiterated in my mind– genuine. The staff and leaders radiate care for their residents. They want you to succeed. As someone pursuing an administrative residency focused on servant leadership, I wanted to be in a supportive yet challenging environment. The leadership team at University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics emphasizes individualized training. They take the time to assess residents' strengths and challenge their aspirations.

The mission of UI Hospitals & Clinics compelled me, but it was the people at UI Hospitals & Clinics who inspired me. This is why I chose University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics.

Why University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics

During my fourth-year rotations, I was able to complete an administration rotation at University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics.  That rotation helped to solidify that I wanted to pursue an administration residency.  When looking for programs, I really wanted a program that had a strong clinical first year of the 2-year Health System Administration and Leadership Residency.  The strong clinical year would allow me to have a solid background and foundation moving into management.  The residency program at University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics had that strong clinical year I was looking for in the Acute Care PGY1 residency year we complete.  I also really enjoyed the people that I met during my rotations and then during the interview process.    The opportunity to choose from multiple master’s programs including the Executive MHA was also a huge draw to the program.

Why University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics

I was interested in the HSPAL program at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics because it was a large academic medical center that aligned with both my personal and professional goals for professional and longitudinal opportunities, managerial experiences, resident support, and preparing residents to practice at the top of their license. An additional perk of the HSPAL program at University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics  was having the ability to choose a master’s degree in my area of interest, informatics. While it was great to have all my boxes checked, my decision was solidified after attending informational sessions, PPS, and my interview with University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics  and seeing how supportive and kind all the preceptors are. The highlight of UIHC is 100% the people.

Favorite Part of Iowa City

I have enjoyed exploring the breweries, restaurants, and trails that Iowa City has to offer. I’ve additionally enjoyed going to bingo, trivia, and other events with my co-residents!
