Our approach to heart and vascular care

If you have questions about your heart or blood vessel (vascular) health, University of Iowa Heart and Vascular Center has answers. We routinely help people who:

  • Are experiencing first-time cardiovascular symptoms such as chest pain or shortness of breath
  • Were born with a heart abnormality
  • Are at risk for developing an inherited (genetic) heart condition
  • Need help managing a chronic condition, such as heart failure,  irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia), or peripheral artery disease
  • Still have troubling symptoms despite trying various treatments
  • Are looking for a second opinion after being told their condition is difficult (or impossible) to treat

Not only are we home to Iowa’s largest team of cardiovascular providers, we’re also the most experienced. This means we can promptly diagnose and treat any condition that comes our way.

The Iowa difference in heart and vascular care

Patients and providers across Iowa turn to UI Health Care’s heart and vascular team because we offer a level of expertise that’s hard to find. We have the tools and technology it takes to diagnose even the rarest or most subtle cardiovascular problems. And we offer treatments tailored to your medical needs, personal preferences, age, and other factors.

We’re also known for providing:

  • Access to evidence-based treatments and game-changing research: When our providers aren’t busy caring for patients, you’ll often find them overseeing clinical trials and other research projects. Because we’re a research leader, our patients are often among the first to have the most promising new treatments.
  • Less invasive heart valve treatments: We’ve made it possible for Iowans who aren’t healthy enough for surgery to undergo a heart valve repair or replacement. We perform more transcatheter aortic valve replacements (TAVR) and transcatheter mitral valve repairs (TMVR) than anyone else in the state.
  • Life-changing care for dangerous or hard-to-treat arrhythmias: We diagnose and treat all types of arrhythmias, including atrial fibrillation (Afib). Our areas of expertise include cardiac ablation and left atrial appendage closure using the Watchman device.
  • The gold standard of cardiac critical care: We’re one of the few medical centers in the U.S. to offer ECMO heart-lung support for infants, children, and adults. And we’re among a handful of health systems worldwide to be named an ECMO Gold Level Center of Excellence—the highest standard in critical care.
  • Unique expertise in heart problems caused by cancer treatments: We’re one of the few programs in Iowa with providers specializing in cardio-oncology. This means we watch for (and treat) short- and long-term heart problems caused by chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and other cancer treatments.
