Occupational Health

Claudia Corwin MD, received her medical degree from Washington University, St. Louis. Dr. Corwin completed her general surgery residency training at State University of New York at Downstate in Brooklyn, New York. She completed a fellowship in Transplant Surgery at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics. With a longstanding interest in public health, she served as Medical Director of Health Care Services for the Iowa Department of Public Health for several years, after which she subsequently completed a Masters Degree in Public Health at Johns Hopkins University. Most recently she completed a residency in occupational medicine at the University of Iowa College of Public Health.

Dr. Corwin is available to see employees for pre-placement evaluations, work injuries, and impairment ratings related to general surgical procedures. She is also a FMCSA Certified Medical Examiner able to perform DOT physicals for commercial drivers.

Patrick Hartley, MD, BCh, BAO, MPH, received his medical degree from University College in Dublin, Ireland. Dr. Hartley completed his internal medicine residency training at St. Vincent’s Hospital and St. James’ Hospital also in Dublin, Ireland. Dr. Hartley then moved to Iowa where he completed a fellowship in pulmonary and critical care medicine at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics. He subsequently completed a residency in occupational medicine and a Masters degree in Public Health (MPH) at the University of Iowa College of Public Health. He is a Clinical Professor in Internal Medicine and in Occupational and Environmental Health at the University of Iowa Colleges of Medicine and Public Health respectively. Dr. Hartley is board certified in occupational medicine.

Dr. Hartley has over 20 years of experience in pulmonary care and critical care medicine, and 15 years of experience in occupational medicine, safety, and health. Prior to coming to UI Occupational Health, Dr. Hartley served 15 years as Medical Director of the UI Hospitals & Clinics Workers' Health Clinic. He continues to serve as Medical Director of the Firefighter and Police Officer Disability Evaluation Program and as Medical Director of the Occupational Medicine Clinic, both at the UI Hospitals & Clinics. He is also a staff physician in pulmonary and critical care medicine at UI Hospitals & Clinics.

Dr. Hartley is available to see employees for pre-placement evaluations, work injuries, disability and impairment ratings, and independent medical evaluations. He is also a FMCSA Certified Medical Examiner able to perform DOT physicals for commercial drivers.

Dr. Hartley has expertise in job matching and functional evaluation, leading to a more strategic approach to the prevention and care of work-related medical concerns.

Liz Highland, ARNP, received her undergraduate degree from University of South Alabama. Liz began practice at University of Iowa Health Care in the Urgent Care setting where she treated a variety of medical conditions, illnesses, and injuries in adult and pediatric populations. Her experience in the walk-in, acute care setting included treatment of work injuries. She is Board-certified by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) and is available to see employees for pre-placement and periodic employment physical exams, as well as treat work injuries.

Denice Hodgson-Zingman, MD, is an adult cardiac electrophysiologist who specializes in treating patients with heart arrhythmias. She treats heart rhythm conditions, including atrial fibrillation (Afib), atrial flutter, ventricular tachycardia, supraventricular tachycardia, genetic cardiac disorders, central sleep apnea, and more. She is an expert at treating these conditions through minimally invasive cardiac ablations, implantable devices, and medications. Patients can be seen for consultations in person and via telemedicine. 

She also leads a nationally recognized research team that studies cardiac metabolism, heart failure, arrhythmias, and the body’s overall balance of metabolism. 

Dr. Hodgson-Zingman received her medical degree from Johns Hopkins University, before completing her residency at the University of Maryland Medical Center. She completed fellowships in cardiovascular disease and cardiac electrophysiology at the Mayo Clinic.

Christopher Iverson, MD, received his medical degree from University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine. During medical school, he simultaneously earned his Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the UI Henry B. Tippie College of Business. After medical school, he completed his residency in Occupational Medicine at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics. As a part of his Occupational Medicine training, Iverson earned a Master of Public Health (MPH) from the UI College of Public Health. Iverson is currently a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Occupational Medicine.

He brings first-hand experience in the fields of both medicine and business to the specialty of Occupational Medicine. A foundation in both fronts provides a unique skill set well suited to effectively navigate the challenges that accompany identification and treatment of work-related exposures and subsequent health problems.

Tracie Neustel, MSN, FNP, ARNP, received her undergraduate degree from Iowa Wesleyan College. Ms. Neustel was then employed as a staff nurse at University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics on an inpatient orthopedics and urology unit for six years. She earned her graduate degree in the Family Nurse Practitioner program at University of Iowa College of Nursing. Ms. Neustel now has over 20 years experience as a nurse practitioner at the UI Occupational Health Clinic, formerly known as UI HealthWorks.

James Blum, MD received his medical degree from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and completed his residency in Anesthesiology and fellowship in Critical Care Medicine at the University of Michigan. He serves as the Chief Health Information Officer for University of Iowa Health Care and as an active member of the clinical faculty in the ORs and ICUs. Dr. Blum is also a Senior Aviation Medical Examiner (AME) with HIMS certification, which enables him to assist with navigating even the most complex clinical cases for pilots. As a commercially certificated pilot, Dr. Blum understands the unique needs of airmen seeking aviation medical advice.

April Allen, PA-C, received her Bachelor of Science degree in Human Physiology from the University of Iowa. She completed her Master of Science degree in Biomedical Sciences from Regis University in Denver, Col. before returning to the University of Iowa to complete the Master of Physician Assistant Studies program at the Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine.

Ms. Allen began practice at University of Iowa Health Care in the UI Urgent Care setting where she treated a variety of medical conditions, illnesses, and injuries in adult and pediatric populations.  Her experience in the walk-in, acute care setting included treatment of work injuries. She is Board-certified by the National Commission of Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) and is available to see employees for pre-placement and periodic employment physical exams, as well as treat work injuries.
