Evidence-Based Practice

Evidence-based practice (EBP) gives nurses the tools to consistently deliver safe, high-quality care to patients while transforming nursing roles in a powerful and meaningful way.

University of Iowa Health Care’s commitment to EBP is what sets nurses apart as leaders, innovators, and difference-makers.

Based on robust evidence from well-designed research, patient concerns and preferences, and clinical experience, EBP helps nurses improve the quality of care and advance the science of nursing.

As a UI Health Care nurse, you will have many opportunities to develop your EBP skills, work with clinical and EBP experts, and make a real difference in the lives of patients.

The Iowa Model

Our unique vision and commitment to EBP led to establishing and copyrighting the internationally acclaimed Iowa Model Revised: Evidence-Based Practice to Promote Excellence in Health Care©.

The Iowa Model guides clinical decision-making and the EBP process from both a clinician and systems perspective. It is also the most frequently used EBP model in Magnet® hospitals.

Magnet®-designated organization

The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) awarded the Magnet Prize® to the University of Iowa Health Care, recognizing the innovative use of EBP to positively impact patient care.

Evidence-based practice opportunities for nurses

Through a variety of innovative programs and mentoring opportunities, UI Health Care nurses can develop EBP skills and expertise to improve outcomes. As a UI Health Care nurse you can:

  • Identify clinical problems and apply to participate in the EBP Staff Nurse Internship
  • Be trained and recognized as an EBP Change Champion
  • Connect with UI Health Care’s world-renowned EBP leaders for consultation, support, and resources
  • Implement and maintain EBP changes using the Iowa Implementation for Sustainability Framework©
  • Apply for a scholarship to attend the annual National EBP Conference
  • Participate in an advanced EBP immersion program with nurses from across the U.S.
  • Become an EBP mentor

Most importantly, you’ll have free access to effective and timesaving EBP tools, strategies, and tips that will help you, your nursing colleagues, interprofessional team members and patients.
