Medical assistants (MAs) are highly valued members of a health care team. As an MA with University of Iowa Health Care, you’ll find a collaborative, interprofessional environment designed to support your success as you grow your career.

Roles and responsibilities

Our medical assistants help deliver the highest-quality patient care by: 

  • Assisting with physical examinations and preparing patients for their visit
  • Documenting care, medications, and patient history using an electronic health record (EHR)
  • Performing routine tests and procedures such as:
    • Casting
    • Dressing changes
    • Electrocardiogram (EKG)
    • Phlebotomy
    • Suture and staple removal
    • Point of care laboratory tests
    • Pre-clean medical instruments and scopes and prepare for transportation
  • Collecting and preparing laboratory specimens for routine and specialized testing
  • Administering medications under the direction of a provider
  • Preparing and routing prescription renewals to the provider
  • Assisting with pre-authorization and prior authorizations
