Our patient care technicians (PCT) and nursing assistants (NA) play an important role in changing medicine and changing lives every day.  

As an PCT or NA, you will work with other health care team members in a fast-paced environment—providing the highest-quality care using the most up-to-date technologies and techniques.  

And, as part of an academic medical center, you’ll help support the latest research and medical advancements, shaping the future of health care in your community, across Iowa, and beyond.

  • Assist with patients’ activities of daily living such as bathing, feeding, and dressing
  • Transport patients, equipment, specimens, and supplies
  • Maintain safe and clean physical surroundings
  • Report urgent situations to appropriate team members
  • Document medical information for the patient’s electronic health record 
  • Establish relationships with patients and families
  • Document medical information in the patient’s electronic health record
  • Support the delivery of care by various team members
  • Assist with patients’ activities of daily living such as bathing, feeding, and dressing
  • Maintain safe and clean physical surroundings
  • Report urgent situations to appropriate team members
  • Safely transport patients between care areas
  • Transport equipment, specimens, and supplies
  • Stock and supply patient rooms and nursing units
Unit partner program
The unit partner program helps students interested in pursuing a career in health care gain valuable work experience in the field. This program helps students to advance to other health care positions, including patient care technicians.
As a unit partner, you help both nurses and patient care technicians provide safe, quality care by completing tasks such as performing patient observation, assisting with meal set up, turning/boosting patients, providing companionship during mealtimes and distraction activities, and preparing patient admissions, transfers, and discharges.
