Why consider a job as a social worker or behavioral health specialist at UI Health Care?

Most of our social workers are based in the Care Coordination Division/Social Services, part of the Department of Nursing Services and Patient Care, or in the Department of Psychiatry. However, social work career opportunities are available across UI Health Care--from Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center to our Downtown campus to Child Health Specialty Clinics.

Social worker roles in the Care Coordination Division

As team members at the only comprehensive academic medical center in Iowa, our social workers and behavioral health team provide a number of services to patients and families --including assessing a patient’s health status and the family’s ability to assist the patient, helping families find resources they need for transportation and coverage for medicines, playing a key role in discharge planning, and building relationships with community health and human services providers across the state.

Social worker roles in the Department of Psychiatry

Social workers in psychiatry offer individual, group, and family psychotherapy; develop programs; and conduct research and public education. They collaborate with a variety of health care professionals to treat patients with substance abuse and mental health disorders.

Team-based approach to helping patients and families

As a social worker at UI Health Care, you are a valued member of an interdisciplinary team dedicated to offering treatment, assisting with personal/family issues, and finding community and financial resources for patients and families they may need as they go through the health care system.

Hear from our team

Read how UI Health Care has provided employees opportunities and has changed their lives.

"UI Health Care provides a truly unique experience for clinical therapists! As a tertiary health care center, we have the opportunity to work with any and all patients, no matter their diagnosis or background. As an academic medical center, the emphasis on continuing professional growth is unmatched and opportunities abound. The mix of opportunities to provide nuanced and complex patient care, while being supported in continued development as a clinician make UI Health Care a great place to work!"
Brittnee Pruter, MSW, LISW
"I love my job! My favorite thing about my job is the ability to work with so many different populations through individual therapy, group therapy, and specialty teams. It is very important to me to provide services that people feel have made an impact when they leave my office or the hospital. The academic environment at UI Health Care allows me to continue to hone my skills, while being able to teach future clinicians and continually improve existing programming. I feel extremely honored that patients allow me to work with them in their most vulnerable states. It provides me with the motivation to provide the best care possible."
Danielle Sparks, MSW, LISW
