University of Iowa Health Care’s Department of Nursing orientation is tailored specifically to your new role and area of employment. You will begin with foundational patient care topics before focusing on the specific patient population you will serve.
Everyone employed in the Department of Nursing will begin their orientation with the following topics:
- Basics about the hospital (online systems, wayfinding)
- Electronic health record training (if needed)
- Hands-on equipment demonstrations
- Introduction to organizational policies and practices
From there, divisional orientation will focus on areas that have similar practices. Each divisional orientation has an educational focus specific to the patient population(s) you will encounter.
Lastly, area-specific orientation will take place, with an experienced preceptor assigned to help you orient to your specific role and understand expectations inpatient care. Unit or clinic orientation may range from weeks to months, depending on the area and your experience level.
