Digital Health and AI-based Tool Governance
UI Health Care uses technology to enhance health care delivery, improve patient outcomes, and streamline operations. We are focused on integrating digital tools like telehealth, remote patient monitoring (RPM), and mobile health to increase access and engagement while maintaining compliance and privacy.
As part of our efforts to adopt technology that improves patient care delivery, UI Health Care uses some tools that use artificial intelligence (AI). These tools are overseen by clinicians and reviewed by our compliance and legal teams.
Frequently Asked Questions
Digital health tools go through UI Health Care’s standard procurement process, as well as a rigorous privacy and security review. In addition, AI-based tools are reviewed by a healthcare AI Governance committee. As these tools continue to evolve and become more advanced, we believe it is important to take a cautious, thoughtful approach to incorporating them into clinical care.
Our AI governance committee is comprised of clinicians, information technology specialists, and other team members with AI experience. The committee reviews new AI-based tools and AI integrations to existing tools to assess how they are trained, how they work, how they safeguard patient data, and any potential risks of adopting the technology.
We require all digital health tools and vendors adhere to all applicable federal, state, and local regulatory frameworks to keep our patient information safe and private.
All digital health and AI-based tools must have safeguards in place to protect health information from being accessed by unauthorized individuals. These include encryption, access controls, audit logs, data integrity, and incident response plans.
Everyone who works at UI Health Care receives training on how to keep health data safe. This includes HIPAA training that explains the law and how to follow it, as well as training on security awareness to spot tricks like fake emails or viruses. In addition, people who work with digital tools get extra training.
By following these rules and teaching our staff, UI Health Care keeps patient information safe and builds trust with the people we care for.
UI Health Care continues to monitor the performance of AI-based tools after adoption. If the tool is performing well, we may look to increase access and scale its use across our operations. If we have concerns about performance, we may make modifications to the tool or remove it from use.
