Project Art is committed to providing an environment that promotes healing, shaped by a robust offering of art exhibitions and performances.
As part of our mission, our Performing Arts program brings in local and regional musicians to benefit the patients, staff and visitors within the hospital.
Performances take place in the hospital's Mirrored Atrium - a unique space that spans 8 levels with open balconies to allow patients and staff from all over the hospital to enjoy and hear live musical performances.
We are always looking for musicians and groups that are interested in performing or volunteering as part of our effort to expand our musical program and bring more music performances throughout the year to our patients, staff and visitors. Live music has proven to significantly improve our patients’ lives, giving them a positive and unique experience while in the hospital.
If you are interested in performing at the University of Iowa Health Care, please fill out Project Art's Performing Arts Survey. For questions, about performances contact Nichole Wolz Project Art Visual & Performing Arts Coordinator, at [email protected].
Performing Here
We welcome all styles and genres of music but do require you to be able to modulate your volume and intensity as needed during a performance.
The atrium is one of the busiest places in the hospital where foot traffic is constant with patients, staff and visitors. Even though many do not come to the hospital expecting a performance, patients and visitors are grateful to run into the musical experience. Some guests will sit for the entire performance, but many will stand, be engaged while walking by,or choose to participate from afar due to their schedules. Most guests will engage for 1-5 minutes and, many audience members will not be visible to the performers, as a vast majority of listeners are on levels 2-8. Project Art wants to prepare potential performers for these variations from a typical performance venue as they may not fit their preferred environment.
Due to hospital visitor regulations, performances are not open to the public.
Performances are split into two general categories: Special events, and Ambient performances.
- Special Events: Special events are hosted as part of a concert series or other special programming. These events have set dates based on events at the hospital. Special event performances are one-hour sets.
- Ambient/Environmental: Our goal for this program is to positively impact listeners and create a restful and pleasant atmosphere. For musicians wanting to play on a more regularly scheduled basis through our Volunteer Services Program. This requires a regular, scheduled commitment and fulfilling the process of becoming a volunteer at the hospital.
Qualification:
• We ask that all musicians have an advanced skill level with their instrument
• Ability to perform with background noise, foot traffic and other distractions
• Comfortable in the hospital environment and interacting with patients of all kinds
• Awareness and sensitivity to audience experiences and needs
