Parking: Frequently Asked Questions

Good news! As of Dec. 3, 2019, patient parking is free at our UI Hospitals & Clinics main Iowa City campus with a Patient Parking Pass.

Patients receiving care may print a Patient Parking Pass from their MyChart account prior to their visit or ask for one when they check in for their appointment. When exiting Hospital Parking Ramps 1, 2, 3, or 4, simply provide the pass to the parking cashier or scan it at a pay-in-lane machine. The one-time-use barcode on each pass waives the parking fee for one vehicle and is valid regardless of the patient’s length of stay.

To get your Patient Parking Pass

For outpatient visits, surgeries, and procedures:

  • Get it from your unit or clinic clerk
    Or
  • Ahead of time, log into MyChart
  • Under “Visits” select “Appointments, Visits, Admissions”
  • Click “Patient Parking Pass.” Print it out and bring it to your visit.

For admitted patients:

The nursing staff will provide the patient one pass on the day of discharge.

Frequently asked questions

Are there any limits to how long the patient’s vehicle can stay in the ramp?

There is no limit.

Does this include patients at UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital?

Yes, all of our patients can receive the Patient Parking Pass.

Will the hospital still offer valet parking?

Yes, valet parking will still be offered. However, the Patient Parking Pass does not apply to valet service; there will continue to be a fee of $15 per day.

What if someone else is driving the patient to the campus and parks in the ramp?

The patient can use the parking pass whether they are driving or not.

What if a patient has multiple appointments in one day, leaves, then returns for another appointment?

Each pass can only be used once, but the patient can get a new Patient Parking Pass for each appointment.

May I get a free parking pass if I stop in to pick up a prescription?

No, free parking passes are for patients receiving outpatient, procedural, surgical or inpatient care at our hospital. However, parking in a hospital ramp is free for the first 30 minutes and only $0.60 for one hour. Or, you may skip the trip altogether and use our prescription mail-order option. Many of our pharmacy products can be shipped directly to you with no mailing costs.

Can friends and family get copies of the patient’s parking pass to use?

No, the pass is only for patient use. However, visitors can purchase a Visitor Parking Pass Booklet with five passes that limit the maximum daily parking costs to $6.

Patient Visitor Parking Pass Booklets

Patient Visitor Parking Pass Booklets are available to limit parking cost for prolonged patient visits. The booklets cost $30 each and contain five patient visitor passes. Each of the five passes is valid for one exit from Hospital Parking Ramps 1, 2, 3, and 4, and limits the maximum parking cost to $6 for a patient visit, as opposed to the $20 full-day maximum cost associated with the standard and graduated rates.

The Visitor Parking Pass Booklets are especially beneficial to those making multiple extended visits here to see a patient with a prolonged stay.

Visitor Parking Pass Booklets can be purchased at the Guest Services Information Desk listed below. When purchasing, visitors need to provide the patient's name.

  • UI Hospitals & Clinics Main Information Desk
